The temperature of the earth, starting at about 6’ or so below grade, remains relatively constant at about 50ºF to 55ºF year-round, winter and summer. It is this phenomenon that is the basis of geothermal energy (also known as ground-source energy). It is, quite literally, the energy of the earth. Heat can be extracted from or discharged into the earth, with little change in its temperature. The transfer medium is typically water that is circulated through pipes that are buried underground. And that energy transfer is extremely efficient. Consider this: In summer in Connecticut, outside temperature can reach 100ºF. With the temperature of the earth at 50ºF to 55ºF, producing cool air at close to that temperature can be done extremely efficiently, far more so than cooling outside air from 100ºF. Similarly, in the winter, outside temperatures can reach 0ºF. With the temperature of the earth at 50ºF to 55ºF, the difference in temperature between that and comfortable indoor temperature of 70ºF or so is only 15ºF to 20ºF, a small increase compared to what is required to heat outside air from 0ºF.

Types of Geothermal Loops

There are generally three different types of piping loops through which water can be circulated: an open loop, where water is pumped out of a well and dumped onto a pond or other water body; a closed loop, where water is continuously recirculated through pipes that are either in a vertical bore or a horizontal excavation; and a standing column, where the water is pumped from the bottom of a well and returned to the top of the well. Each has its advantages depending on factors such as land availability, well-water sufficiency, and local codes in Connecticut.

Heating and Cooling Equipment

The heating and air conditioning (and hot water!) equipment used for these systems is a geothermal heat pump. It is similar to the conventional heat pump, but instead of an outdoor compressor, which extracts heat from and discharges heat into the air, a geothermal heat pump has an indoor compressor, which extracts heat from and discharges heat into the water circulating in the loop. These systems are extremely quiet and, because they are indoors, do not have to suffer the extremes of weather common to New York and Connecticut.
