Most businesses will have generators should an emergency situation occur and electricity is unavailable. When this happens, it is important to know what size and what type of generator you have. Why? It’s important because you may need to prioritize what objects you power up and which you leave alone until the power comes back on. Most people believe that all generators are the same, but that is certainly not true. Here’s some information on how to tell what size and type generator you have:

Types of Generators
In most cases, you will find that your business has a standby generator, one that is stationary and located somewhere in your building or property. If you don’t have a stationary generator, it is possible that you have a portable one. Though smaller than stationary generators in most cases, there is a certain appeal to having a generator that you can move, especially if your business covers a large area.

Generator Sizes
Generators come in a variety of sizes from 5 kW up to 30 kW or more. The larger your generator is, the more it will power. A small, 5 kW generator will only power up things like lights, a mobile phone, laptop, and perhaps an appliance like a refrigerator. At a minimum, a business should have at least an 8 to 10 kW generator in place, and it is highly recommended that it be larger, especially if you have data that needs protected or merchandise that needs refrigerated.

Finding Out What You Have
You should be able to find out what type of generator you have simply by looking at it. As for the size of the generator, you may need to do some digging, but it will usually be shown on the generator. If not, reach out to the manufacturer for more assistance.

Having an emergency procedure for your employees is also very important. Make sure everyone knows where to go should a storm hit and practice this with drills. It is always better to take a few minutes every month or so to review the procedures than have employees panicking in a storm because they don’t know what to do.

Finally, you should make sure that you know what your insurance company covers and how your business is protected from any storm conditions. Keep in mind that not all policies will cover all situations.

What is LEED Silver?

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a certification for green building that recognizes eco-friendly building practices and strategies. LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. In order to receive LEED Silver certification in Cambridge from the U.S. Green Building Council, buildings need to meet specific criteria and earn points to achieve different certification levels.

LEED certification is a premier mark of achievement in green building. Getting LEED certified gives you access of a number of state and local government incentives. It can also help to increase interest in your project. This certification shows your clients, peers, and the public that you’ve achieved your environmental goals.

What is LEED Silver? Are there different types?

For most projects, there are four levels of LEED certification:

• Certified
• Silver
• Gold
• Platinum

These four levels of certification correspond to the number of credits earned in these categories:

• Sustainable Sites
• Water Efficiency
• Energy and Atmosphere
• Materials and Resources
• Indoor Environmental Quality
